Val Gardena is a valley located in-between the Dolomites in Italy, in a territory called South Tyrol (or Südtirol).
Val Gardena is composed of three villages: Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva Val Gardena. The official spoken languages are Italian, German and Ladin, a Romance language spoken in norhern Italy in various different dialects.
Choosing Val Gardena as the destination of your ski holiday is definitely something that must be done at least once in life, so today we are going to show you why.
Here are the best 5 reasons to spend your ski holiday in Val Gardena.
1. The quality and the amount of ski slopes
With 175 km of ski slopes and 83 ski lifts, Val Gardena represents for sure the perfect place for every skier. As an endless white slope, it just awaits you and your ski or snowboard.
To enjoy your holiday at the fullest, we recommend you to choose a ski in/ski out hotel. In this way, you will be able to directly access the ski slopes from the ski room of your hotel. A real comfort, we would say!
2. Ski World Cup
Every December on the well-known Saslong slope, which goes down to S. Cristina, takes place the Ski World Cup. This year this event will be even more significant, since it is the 50th anniversary of the competition. Do you need any more reason to attend it? Worry not, because we have some other aces in our hole: in the three days event there will be a lot more to do and see: in addition to the competition, Super G on December 15 and Men’s Downhill on December 17, there will be trainings, music, a light show, parades and much more.
3. Winter events in Val Gardena
Many events will make your holiday in Val Gardena unforgivable, especially during the winter season. We are going to have the big start with the Christmas Markets, which will give joy and magic to the three gardenian villages (Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva), from the first week of December to the first week of January. Then, the already mentioned Ski World Cup and also the Hero Ice Cross, an MTB competition… The truth is: Val Gardena never stops!

4. Cuisine and handicraft
As an ancient place, Val Gardena has developed its habits, handicrafts and traditional dishes.
The whole South Tyrol can count on poor but fanciful ingredients that will surprise you in every single restaurant you will try. On the other hand, artisans will become your best ally when it comes to buying souvenirs: in fact, one of the most famous gardenian characteristic is wood carving, where toys and dolls play a very important role.
5. Full relax at the wellness centers
Of course vacations are not entirely made up by sports and activities; sometimes there is nothing better than relax inside a warm pool or a spa. Then, don’t miss the occasion to live life at its fullest and end your day at a magnificent wellness centre with pool, sauna and any other therapy you desire.
Are you looking for an hotel for a holiday week?
Then you can’t miss Hotel Somont, placed directly on the ski slopes, with pools and spa in Selva Val Gardena.
