The arrival of summer brings with it the need to walk outdoors and get in touch with nature.

Especially in the Dolomites, nature as flora, fauna, geology and landscapes are the main attractions and attract tourists from all over the world every summer.

Val Gardena is a territory full in history and culture, territories to explore, activities to experience: if you are curious you will never stop to discover.

This area is inhabited by many species of fauna: be patient, respect the peace, nature, and with a little luck you can see the most disparate types of animals.

On this occasion we’ll go to discover some non-native animals of the area, but now very famous, especially at Christmas: the Alpacas.

The Alpaca Village in S. Cristina

Val Gardena is famous for the production of Alpaca wool, a very active sector in Italy, and in S. Cristina there is one of the main farms of these curious Australian animals.

Gardena Valley Alpacas‘ is the name of the family-owned farm, specialized since 2000 in the breeding and importation of Alpacas from Australia and New Zealand.

The Demetz family takes care of these animals with passion, making them participate in beauty exhibitions and opening the farm to the public to allow tourists, families and children to visit and discover everything about the Alpaca world.

The Route of the itinerary

In this article we offer a leisure hike, suitable for everyone and great to be undertaken in the family: it is a perfect experience to learn more about Val Gardena and its activities, see the curious Alpaca and learn about the family that raises them for years.

The itinerary combines more activities: a walk through nature, a visit to the waterfalls and the discovery of the Alpaca village, which will excite young and old.

It starts from the center of S. Cristina, one of the three localities in Val Gardena, and then head towards the hidden waterfall at Soplases.
From the waterfall you can easily reach the Alpacas Gardena Valley, where the Demetz family will show visitors the activity of the company proposing a tour of the farm.
Following the visit, we proceed with the walk along a calm forest, arriving at a second waterfall and then returning to the center of S. Cristina.

The hike is easy and 3 km long, so it is an excellent excursion with children.
It is an initiative of ‘Val Gardena Active S. Cristina‘, organized every Sunday from June to September and registration is required (you can find more information at this link).
